Entrance door security

The different solutions for reinforcing your front door

A door’s low-end cylinder allows burglars to enter your home in just seconds. To avoid break-ins if you cannot replace your current door with an armored door, it is therefore important to reinforce all the weak points of your front door.

Indeed, you can protect your home by only replacing its weak points:

  1. Install a high security cylinder;
  2. Install a door lock;
  3. Provide anti-clamp angles;
  4. Provide hinge guards;
  5. Install a high security lock: a 3-point, 5-point or 7-point lock;
  6. Choose a cylinder protector;
  7. Opt for an armored door handle;
  8. Select a wireless doorbell and/or wireless video intercom;
  9. Install a door opener;
  10. Install an electronic lock cylinder.

So, if you opt for armoring your door, the intervention of a professional will be necessary to identify the weak points of your front door. This identification operation will make it possible to target sensitive points to be secured while optimizing expenses.

Install a high security cylinder

If you want to increase the security of your current front door, the door cylinder is probably one of the first items to replace. To protect yourself against intrusions, opt for a high security barrel and a good quality cylinder.

The size of the cylinder will also impact the level of security. In fact, the barrel must not protrude from the door by more than 5 mm on the exterior side. Thus, it does not provide sufficient grip to burglars who will otherwise try to tear it off.

Please note that an anti-burglary cylinder is always delivered with an essential owner’s card to make a duplicate key, unlike a classic cylinder.

Install a door lock

It is possible to add different locking points to a door, independently of the main lock. This solution allows you to strengthen your front door by multiplying the number of locks and therefore locks to force in order to enter the accommodation.

The downside is having to unlock and lock multiple locks on your door every time you arrive or leave. However, it is an effective solution.

Provide anti-clamp angles

If you do not want to replace your door, installing anti-pinch angles will be an excellent solution to increase the security level of your home. Burglars will then not be able to pass tools between the frame and the door, such as a crowbar for example, to enter your home.

Most of the time, anti-pinch angles are equipped with screws that cannot be unscrewed so that a burglar cannot dismantle the structure to use his crowbar.

Provide hinge guards

Burglars don’t just attack the locks on front doors. Indeed, if they realize that it is resistant, they will look for another weak point at your front door. This can be found in particular at the hinges.

It is possible to reinforce the hinges of your lock to protect your home against intrusions. By installing hinge guards, you prevent the possibility of prying the door open with a crowbar.

Install a high security lock: a 3-point, 5-point or 7-point lock

To reinforce the security of an entrance door against break-in attempts, an A2P certified lock is essential. This minimum level of security avoids letting the burglar pick the lock, tear it off or drill it.

Choose a cylinder protector

Since successful break-ins by picking the front door cylinder are so common, as is breaking, drilling or ripping out the cylinder, it is important to secure this element.

The more it protrudes from the door on the exterior side of your home, the more fragile a cylinder is. To protect it and reinforce the level of security of your entrance door, it is important to opt for a quality cylinder protector.

By delaying the break-in as long as possible, you put all the chances on your side so that the burglars abandon their attempt for fear of being spotted by you or by neighbors.< /p>

Opt for an armored door handle

An armored door handle can also be installed on a classic door. This is a good way to slow down break-ins. In fact, an armored handle is equipped with a lock shield which prevents a burglar from drilling or tearing it off.

By installing an armored door handle, you very effectively protect the lock cylinder. To choose the handle, you will need to take into account different points, such as:

  1. The thickness of the door;
  2. The type of center distance;
  3. The type of handle (landing door handle or double handle version), etc.

Select a wireless doorbell and/or wireless video intercom

Burglars generally prowl the neighborhood for several days or weeks before taking action. They notice your rhythm and try to identify places. On the day of the burglary, they will always start by checking if you are at home by ringing the intercom.

Thanks to connected systems, it is now possible to install an intercom or video intercom that allows you to respond remotely.

By installing this type of equipment, you are able to respond to someone ringing your gate or apartment from your workplace or an evening with friends. The burglar will then think that you are at home and abandon the idea.

Be careful, never answer that you are not at home at the moment. Burglars usually have an excuse ready: they wanted to sell you something or offer their services, etc.

Install a door opener

A door opener is a security system that allows you to check the identity of the person at your door before opening it completely. This solution is particularly practical in apartments where it is impossible to install a peephole in compliance with the co-ownership regulations.

This mechanism is installed inside your home and prevents the door from fully opening. It helps delay intrusions. A door opening takes the form of a simple chain or a more solid piece of metal attached behind the door.

Install an electronic lock cylinder

Today, it is no longer necessarily necessary to lock your home with a key. It is also possible to opt for an electronic solution. In buildings, the entrance doors to apartments are sometimes opened with a digital code or a personal badge. This lock solution is also starting to appear on house entrance doors.

To increase the security of your front door, it is possible to opt for an electronic lock. The cylinder must then be changed so that the electromagnetic pulse can work. For maximum security, you can also opt for a biometric module.
